Skin Severance SystemsDescriptionMissile systems that are required to dispense submunitions often require a reliable and cost effective method of removing structure to create a dispense window in the delivery vehicle. Use of an explosive based skin severance system, utilizing metal sheathed Linear Shaped Charge (LSC) is a typical way to create this dispense window. A typical skin severance system utilizes a safe and arm device (SAD) or fuze to redundantly initiate explosive transfer lines, such as Flexible Confined Detonating Cord Assemblies (FCDCA) or Shock Tube Assemblies (STA). These transfer lines are then used to initiate a Linear Shaped Charge Assembly (LSCA) that is fixed to the skin of the missile using a chargeholder to control standoff and positioning of the LSC. Manifolds, in-line delay components and explosively actuated safing mechanisms may be used in the system as well to control event sequencing while meeting the requirements of MIL-STD-1316. |
